What Is VAT?

VAT — Value Added Tax — is a tax added to many goods and services sold by businesses in the UK. It’s a normal part of trading, and some businesses choose to register so they can claim back VAT on their costs and work more easily with other VAT‑registered organisations.

Registration isn’t always necessary, and it does come with responsibilities. Once registered, businesses must charge VAT, keep digital records, and file regular VAT returns.

VAT isn’t one‑size‑fits‑all. Different items fall into different categories — standard rate, reduced rate, zero‑rated, exempt, or outside the scope. Knowing the difference helps businesses understand how VAT affects their pricing and paperwork.

If you’re unsure whether VAT is right for your business, speaking to an accountant or checking official guidance can make things much clearer.
